MEZHYHIRYA OF THEATER

In 1923-1924, at the initiative of students and teachers of the Mezhyhirya art and ceramic college, a puppet show was organized in the Mezhyhirya vertep, or Revolutionary Puppet Theater, under the direction of art historian and team member P. Horbenko who taught social and economic sciences. Information about the Mezhyhirya vertep can be found in P. Horbenko’s “Revolutionary Puppet Theater” book by “Knyhospilka” publishing house, 1924.

The engraving illustrations were made by students of the woodcut workshop of the Kyiv Institute of Art under the direction of Sofia Nelypynska-Boychuk.

In the summer of 1933, Les Kurbas took the Berezil Theater for six weeks to the newly organized Art House of the All-Ukrainian Union of Proletarian Writers, which was located in the buildings of the Mezhyhirya Monastery. The Berezilians were then working to perform Mykola Kulish’s play “Maklena Hrasa”, Kurbas’ last work in his theater.
